Six Vice-Presidential Candidates Face Off in First Debate Ahead of September 27 Election
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The six vice-presidential candidates contesting the September 27, 2025 election took part in the first vice-presidential debate organised by the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) on Friday evening at SBC House, Union Vale. The candidates who took part were Daniella Payet (Lalyans Nouvo Sesel), Sebastien Pillay (United Seychelles), Bernard Port-Louis (One Seychelles), Francoise Larue (Seychelles People’s National Movement), Allen Commettant (independent, backing Ralph Volcere) and Rebecca Belle (Seychelles United Movement, backing Charles de Clarisse).
Kisna Louise, running with Brina Morel, did not attend. Each candidate was given a one-minute response for the first set of questions and 30 seconds thereafter, with the moderator, Georgette Hoareau, alongside journalists Marie-Claude d’Unienville, ensuring fair participation. Issues raised included the cost of living, fiscal reform, drug abuse, unemployment, the constitutional role of the vice-president, and the development of local skills, with candidates presenting their parties’ programmes and their personal vision for the office.
The debate offered voters a first comparative look at the vice-presidential candidates ahead of the September 25-27 election. Further debates and interviews with presidential candidates are scheduled in the coming days as the campaign enters its final stretch.
