SPNM Candidate Robert Moumou Puts Drug Crisis and Cost of Living at Centre of 2025 Campaign

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Robert Moumou, leader and founder of the Seychelles People’s National Movement (SPNM), is contesting the September 2025 presidential election alongside running mate Françoise Larue. Mr Moumou, who holds a Master’s degree in Leadership and Strategy and spent 16 years in rehabilitation work, said his candidacy is rooted in his experience with ordinary Seychellois families.

On his priorities, Mr Moumou said drugs and alcohol represent the country’s most urgent social crisis. ‘When I visited Chetty Flats, drugs were being sold openly near a playground. The same situation exists at Les Mamelles. This must be tackled with stronger police presence, cameras, and if necessary, the army,’ he said. He proposed involving faith-based organisations in rehabilitation, providing them with government resources, and introducing a levy on alcohol producers to fund rehabilitation services. He also noted that the cost of living is a top priority, arguing that fiscal policy has been largely overlooked, and that a meaningful reduction in fuel taxes would ease the burden on families without requiring external assistance.

On housing, Mr Moumou said a simple bedsitter on the private market costs around R10,000, far above what most Seychellois earn. He said he intends to resolve issues that have dragged on for years without solutions, and that his strongest qualification is simply that he is a man of the people who deeply cares for the nation.
