Seychelles Tourism Operators Discuss Open Border Policy for Tourism Growth

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Members of the Seychelles tourism operators community have called for an open border policy to boost the tourism industry, especially in light of global uncertainties affecting key markets on which Seychelles heavily depends. The discussions, held with the support of Madame Virginie Mathieu, honorary consul of the Republic of Seychelles in Lyon, France, emphasised the importance of opening up the country’s border to the wider global community.

The operators also expressed their desire for a border policy that, although more open to allow the country to be in line with human rights and international norms, remains firmly secured against illegal immigration, drug trafficking, terrorism and the spread of disease. The members noted that these factors are crucial to national security, economic stability and public safety.

Among those who spoke against a more open border approach was the leader of the opposition, Honourable Sebastien Pillay, who questioned the true motive behind the move, suggesting that it may serve undisclosed government interests on the eve of a national election, rather than being driven by tourism or business purposes. In his summing up, Minister Fonseka emphasised that Seychelles’ border control is the most advanced in the world to deal with any border issues, and that the country remains vigilant in balancing openness with security.
