SUM Leader Calls for Defence of Constitution on Constitution Day

VICTORIA, Seychelles — On the occasion of Constitution Day, Maarco Francis, leader of the Seychelles United Movement (SUM) and the party’s presidential candidate for the September 27, 2025 election, has issued a message calling on Seychellois to defend the Constitution and resist what he described as repeated amendments made without the consent of the people. The message comes ahead of the national commemorations on June 18.
‘On this Constitution Day, we gather to honour the cornerstone of our democracy, the Constitution of Seychelles. This document is more than a set of laws; it is the embodiment of our shared values, our rights, and our vision for a united and just nation. Today, we reflect on its significance and recommit to protecting its integrity for all Seychellois,’ Mr Francis stated. He added that, under the LDS administration and President Wavel Ramkalawan, the Constitution has been repeatedly amended without the consent of the people, often against the collective will, in what he characterised as an effort to consolidate power.
The Seychelles United Movement has rejected what it called this disregard for democratic principles, asserting that the Constitution belongs to the people of Seychelles, not to any one administration. Mr Francis said the power to shape the nation’s future lies with Seychellois, and called on citizens to engage actively in the democratic process leading up to the September election. He reiterated SUM’s commitment to upholding the principles of accountability, transparency and respect for the rule of law, and urged Seychellois to use the occasion of Constitution Day to reflect on the importance of safeguarding the country’s foundational document for future generations.
