Electoral Commission Sets September 27 for Presidential and National Assembly Elections

VICTORIA, Seychelles — With just 172 days remaining before the 2025 general elections in Seychelles, the Electoral Commission of Seychelles has officially announced the provisional dates for the nomination of candidates for the presidential and the National Assembly elections as August 12, 2025 and August 14, 2025 respectively. The exercise will be between 8am and 4pm.

The announcement was made by the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Seychelles, Wendy Didon, during a press conference held last Friday morning at the commission’s headquarters, Mont Fleuri. Present were representatives of political parties, independent candidates and the media. The press conference was to explain the procedures and requirements for nomination of candidates for the election, as per the Electoral Act 27 of 2014. Mrs Didon said the two dates for nomination of candidates are provisional as the information is yet to be gazetted. ‘Publication in the Official Gazette will officially confirm the dates,’ Mrs Didon said.

Highlighting the criteria, chief electoral officer Manuella Amesbury explained that a person has to be a Seychellois of 18 years and above, and also a registered voter, to qualify as a presidential and/or a National Assembly candidate. All nomination papers must be submitted in person. A presidential candidate has to deposit a sum of R15,000 and the sum for a National Assembly candidate is R1,500. A presidential candidate has to be endorsed by 500 registered voters from across the country and the National Assembly candidate by 50 registered voters from the specific electoral area the individual will be contesting. The nomination ceremony and the drawing of lots for order of appearance on the ballot paper for presidential and National Assembly elections will take place in the evening of August 14, 2025, which will also mark the start of political campaigning.
