Diageo Sells 54.4% Shareholding in SBL to Phoenix Beverages

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Diageo plc, the British multinational alcoholic beverage company, has sold its 54.4 percent shareholding in Seychelles Breweries Limited (SBL) to Phoenix Beverages Ltd, a subsidiary of Mauritius-based IBL Group. The transaction marks a significant shift in the regional beverage industry, with one of the Indian Ocean’s most established brewing operations changing hands after decades under British ownership.

Phoenix Beverages, known for its significant standing with regard to brewery across the Indian Ocean Islands, has been a long-time partner to Diageo in Mauritius, especially in producing Guinness and Smirnoff Ready-to-Drink alcoholic beverages such as Smirnoff Ice and Smirnoff Red Ice for Seychelles Breweries. The acquisition strengthens Phoenix Beverages’ regional footprint and consolidates its presence in the Indian Ocean brewing market, where it has been steadily expanding its portfolio and distribution networks.

The sale is expected to have implications for SBL’s operations in Seychelles, including employment, local sourcing and production. Industry observers note that Phoenix Beverages has a strong track record of investing in brand development and operational efficiency, which could translate into growth opportunities for SBL. The Times of Seychelles will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available regarding the implications for the local market and any potential rebranding or restructuring plans at Seychelles Breweries.
