Skills Development Programme Opens Door for 2024 School Leavers

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Secondary school leavers from 2024 who have not been admitted to a post-secondary institution are being given the opportunity to register under the Skills Development Programme administered by the Employment department. The programme provides on-the-job training for unskilled youth aged 18 to 30, lasting between six to 12 months, depending on the chosen career path. It was launched yesterday, and the application deadline is tomorrow.
However, it will remain open beyond this date, throughout the year, for those who miss the initial deadline. Director general for Employment Promotion, Chetna Saunders, said the programme will develop both hard and soft skills. In addition to technical training, participants will learn essential workplace competencies such as professional grooming, effective communication, and interview techniques to enhance their employability. ‘They need to understand that this is not the end. This opportunity allows them to enter an industry they enjoy, with the potential for employment where they are trained. If that is not possible, other opportunities in the job market will be available,’ Ms Saunders explained.
She added that the Employment department will follow up with students after their training to track their progress and assess whether they secure jobs at their training sites, and if not, the department will assist with job placement. ‘This process will intensify in 2025, with follow-up surveys conducted three to six months after completion to determine if they remain in their trained industry. This is crucial for us, as we identify sectors facing labour shortages and guide students toward training opportunities in those fields,’ said Ms Saunders, adding that students can apply at the Employment department office, Room 14, Oceangate House.
