President Ramkalawan Delivers 2025 State of the Nation Address

VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Wavel Ramkalawan yesterday delivered his annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) before the National Assembly, setting out his administration’s accomplishments, ongoing challenges and plans for the year ahead. Speaking to a packed chamber, the President emphasised commitments to democracy, economic resilience, governance reforms, social welfare and national security, while reassuring Seychellois that progress remains on track despite global pressures.

On the economy, the President noted that as of the start of February 2025, the country’s reserves stood at US$736 million, up from US$688 million in December 2023, with net international reserves reaching US$874 million — exceeding the first quarter 2025 target of US$855 million by US$19 million. Tourism recorded 384,895 visitors in 2024, slightly below the target of 430,000, but representing an 11% increase on 2023’s 350,845. Tourism revenue rose from US$689 million in 2023 to US$748 million in 2024, and is estimated to reach US$839 million in 2025. President Ramkalawan reaffirmed the April 2025 salary increase for public sector workers and benefits for senior citizens, students and others.

On security, the President renewed his commitment to fighting drug trafficking and organised crime, warning that law enforcement will remain relentless against those involved and that Seychellois killed abroad as guarantors for drug trafficking will be brought to justice. He also announced that the Seychelles Licensing Authority (SLA) will be transformed to eliminate long, unnecessary procedures, and that the University of Seychelles will be given its own laws. He confirmed that the Assomption Hotel project will continue, with the Seychelles Islands Foundation taking charge of all biosecurity matters on Assomption, and that the Islands Development Company (IDC) will create Seychellois visitor facilities on Platte, Desroches, Silhouette, Alphonse, Farquhar and Remire. First Lady Linda Ramkalawan, Vice-President Ahmed Afif, Principal Minister Jean-François Ferrari, cabinet ministers and Chief Justice Rony Govinden attended.
