Vice President Afif Receives Australian Donation for Blast Victims

VICTORIA, Seychelles, Vice President Ahmed Afif received a donation of five thousand Australian dollars yesterday morning at State House to help victims affected by the CCCL blast that occurred on December 7, 2023. The donation was handed over to the Vice President by Marcus Mitz, a young Seychellois representing some of the Seychellois diaspora in Australia as well as friends of Seychelles. The gesture reflects the strong ties that exist between the Seychellois community abroad and their homeland.

Marcus stated that as a Seychellois, he was saddened to see the destruction that this caused to our beautiful country. He noted that many people he spoke to overseas were willing to help in whatever way they could and this is where the idea to collect funds and hand over to Seychelles began. The fundraising effort was organised quickly through social media and word of mouth.

He was touched by the generosity of people who were moved by the many scenes of wrecked houses and destroyed livelihoods. He hoped that this donation will help in some way to help the government to restore normality after the disaster. The funds will be channelled towards supporting families whose homes and businesses were damaged in the explosion.

Vice President Afif thanked Marcus as well as all those who helped to make this donation and assured him that this would be put to help in the recovery effort in the affected areas. He said he was touched by the kindness of those living overseas including many Seychellois who obviously care about their country and their fellow citizens. The Vice President noted that such acts of solidarity strengthen the bonds between the diaspora and the home country.

He wished Marcus and his relatives all the very best and a safe journey back to Australia. The donation is the latest in a series of contributions from the Seychellois diaspora and friends of the country, all of which have been channelled to support the ongoing recovery effort. The government has expressed its gratitude for the continued generosity of the diaspora community.
