President Ramkalawan Pledges Sustainable Tourism at World Governments Summit in Dubai

VICTORIA, Seychelles, President Wavel Ramkalawan joined several other world leaders at the 11th World Governments Summit 2024 in Dubai, where he delivered his main address focusing on the country’s initiatives and approaches to ensure sustainable tourism and balancing preservation. In his address to world leaders at the event, the head of State underlined the pivotal role that Seychelles is playing in conservation, implementing various initiatives to promote sustainable tourism and safeguarding the nation’s ecological balance and economic well-being. He touched upon the blue economy, the Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label, renewable energy sources, and community involvement among other important initiatives.

President Ramkalawan used the platform to highlight the country’s journey towards becoming a global leader in sustainable tourism. He shared how the nation has integrated environmental protection into its tourism policy, ensuring that growth in visitor numbers does not come at the expense of natural heritage. The president noted that small island developing states face unique challenges in balancing economic development with ecological preservation, and that Seychelles has sought to turn these challenges into opportunities.

The Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label was presented as a key achievement, with more than 30 establishments now certified under the scheme. The label recognises businesses that meet strict criteria in energy efficiency, waste management, water conservation, and community engagement. The president told world leaders that the label has helped to position Seychelles as a destination of choice for environmentally conscious travellers.

On the blue economy, the president spoke of the country’s progress in developing its vast maritime resources sustainably. He highlighted the designation of 30 percent of the exclusive economic zone as marine protected areas, and the ongoing Seychelles Marine Special Planning process. These initiatives, he said, demonstrate the country’s commitment to protecting its oceans while creating economic opportunities for its people.

The president’s address was well received by delegates, who praised Seychelles for its leadership on environmental issues. Several speakers noted that small island states are often at the frontline of climate change, and that initiatives like those implemented in Seychelles offer valuable lessons for the rest of the world. The World Governments Summit 2024 brought together heads of state and government, ministers, and policy experts from more than 140 countries to discuss shared challenges and opportunities.
