Seychelles National Assembly Gears Up for New Legislative Year
VICTORIA, Seychelles, The National Assembly of Seychelles will start its legislative year on Thursday February 22, 2024, in line with established parliamentary practice. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team has been working for weeks to make sure that every procedural and logistical detail is in place. Deputy clerk Alexandria Faure has confirmed that all arrangements are progressing as planned for the opening day.
The opening of the parliament year follows processes that are set out in the constitution, the standing orders, and long-established parliamentary practice. These foundational rules determine how the assembly conducts its business, from the seating arrangements to the order of debates. The clerk’s office has circulated guidance notes to all members ahead of the session.
Members are bracing themselves for a packed agenda, with several bills carried over from the previous session expected to come up for debate, alongside fresh policy proposals from the executive. The assembly will also consider motions and questions on a wide range of national issues, from the cost of living to climate adaptation. Citizens and civil society groups will be following the proceedings with keen interest.
Coordination is well advanced with the office of the speaker, the leader of government business, and the various government departments that have items on the order paper. The traditional ceremonial elements of the opening day have also been organised, including the procession and the head of state’s address. Security and protocol plans have been finalised to ensure a smooth day.
The start of a new legislative year is one of the most significant moments on the national calendar, marking the beginning of another cycle of law-making, scrutiny, and accountability. The session ahead is expected to focus on rebuilding the economy, strengthening social programmes, and protecting the environment. Members will be expected to rise to the occasion and serve the people who elected them.
