Local Singer Daniel Wins Best Selling Artist at Cable Tune Awards 2023
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Local singer Daniel has been named the best-selling artist for Cable Tune 2023, walking away with the top prize at the 11th Cable Tune awards. The ceremony was held inside a packed NSC Hall at Roche Caïman on Saturday night, and the dreadlocked artist received his prize in front of a crowd of enthusiastic fans who had come to witness the annual celebration of local music. The awards are sponsored by Cable & Wireless Seychelles (CWS), and the 2023 edition was particularly special as it coincided with the company’s 130th anniversary celebrations. The ceremony was one of the most high-profile events of the local entertainment calendar.
Daniel’s prizes for the best-selling artist category included a trophy and a cash prize from CWS, a gift bag from Seychelles Breweries Ltd, and a gift voucher from Moloko restaurant. He also won the prize for Best TéléSesel Top 10 along with Reuben, for their song Doub Konsyans. The double win is a mark of the broad appeal of the artist, and of the strength of the collaboration with Reuben on the song that was a fixture of local radio in 2023. The awards are voted on by the public, and Daniel used his acceptance speech to thank the fans who have supported his music over the year.
In the other categories, Auspitious and Tania won the prize for best male and best female artists respectively. Auspitious also won the best album accolade. Sophie Morgan featuring Highness with their song Parey Ou won the award for best collaboration, and the award for best music producer went to Dareal Thing. The recognition of Tania as best female artist was, in her own words, not expected, and she thanked the fans for the recognition. The breadth of the winners is being read in the local industry as a sign of the diversity of the Seychellois music scene, and of the strength of the next generation of artists.
With regard to filming, the song Pain by Mikhail won the award for best video clip, and the producer of this same video, Danio Denousse from Endemic Media Seychelles, won the award for best video producer. There was also an award for the best live performing artist for the night, and this went to Julia. The recognition of Julia for the live performance category is being read as a mark of the growing importance of live performance in the local music scene, and of the value that the awards place on the craft of performing on stage.
Speaking to the media, both Daniel and Tania said they did not expect to win prizes and were thankful to all the loyal fans. Both artists said they were working on a new album to be released soon. I was not expecting to win any prizes today but on the whole I am satisfied with what I have been able to achieve in music, to please my fans, said Daniel. They are the ones voting for me and I thank them. The Cable Tune Awards were first introduced under the umbrella of #Siportartislokal in 2009, and have become the most important annual event on the local music calendar.
