Seychelles Marks King Charles III 76th Birthday with Battle for the Crown Launch
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The British High Commissioner in Seychelles hosted a vibrant celebration at his Bel Air residence to mark the 76th birthday of King Charles III, unveiling a new cultural initiative titled The Great Battle for the Crown music contest. The King’s Birthday Party brought together distinguished guests including President Patrick Herminie, First Lady Veronique Herminie, government ministers, and senior figures from both the public and private sectors.
This year’s theme spotlighted the enduring legacy of British music and its power to transcend cultures. In his welcome remarks, High Commissioner Jeffrey Glenkin emphasised the evolving partnership between the United Kingdom and Seychelles, highlighting collaboration in education, health, anti-corruption, policing, child protection, and cyber security. ‘The UK-Seychelles partnership has been built steadily and with purpose,’ HC Glenkin said. Reflecting on the theme, he noted that the new contest represents a UK-Seychelles collaboration with the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation and local performers Tania and Isham.
The competition will unfold across six episodes, featuring Seychellois bands performing iconic British hits while showcasing their own creativity. Winners will receive a career-boosting prize, including a UK-based music production opportunity designed to expand their international reach. Minister for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Ambassador Barry Faure, reminded attendees that the United Kingdom is home to one of the largest Seychellois diaspora communities worldwide. ‘Our ties go beyond institutions — they are lived every day through people-to-people connections,’ he said.
