India Donates 3.5 Tonnes of Essential Medicines to Seychelles

VICTORIA, Seychelles — India has donated a consignment of 3.5 tonnes of essential medicines to Seychelles, reaffirming the long-standing and multi-faceted partnership between the two nations. The Indian High Commissioner to Seychelles, Rohit Rathish, formally handed the substantial consignment to Health Minister Marvin Fanny, in a ceremony on Thursday morning at the Red Roof Building at the Seychelles Hospital, in the presence of President Patrick Herminie and other health officials.

Nearly 60 per cent of the 3.5 tonnes of medicines supplied comprise essential drugs for the management of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, heart failure, hypercholesterolaemia, and antiplatelet therapies. The remaining 40 per cent include medicines for diabetes, gastrointestinal ailments, and other widely-used vitamins and supplements. For decades, India has supported Seychelles’ efforts to strengthen its healthcare system through training, capacity building, medical equipment, supply of methadone vans, and timely supplies of pharmaceutical essentials.

‘The importance of health will continue to grow in our partnership. India stands ready to support the ambitions and goals of President Herminie and the government of Seychelles in the health sector, and to help improve access to medicines for those in need,’ the High Commissioner said, adding that India remains committed to supporting Seychelles in its national development priorities. According to Chief Pharmacist Lucile De Commarmond, the donation will cater for the ministry’s medical requirement for 2026.
