Foundation Stones Laid for New 12-Unit Housing Project on La Digue

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Symbolic foundation stones were laid on Tuesday on La Digue, in the vicinity of Lale Kersley, to mark the beginning of the first phase of a new housing project consisting of 12 units.

President Wavel Ramkalawan laid the first stone at the site, followed by the Minister for Lands and Housing, Billy Rangasamy, the elected member of the National Assembly for the Inner Islands, Rocky Uranie, principal secretary for housing Jude Florentine and the district administrator for La Digue, Barbara Barallon. The President and the Minister also unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Rangasamy said the project represents the government’s continued commitment to delivering quality homes across all three main islands, including the inner islands. He noted that La Digue has been identified as a priority for new social housing in the coming years, alongside ongoing projects on Mahé and Praslin.

The 12-unit development is the first of several planned phases for the site. Authorities said the project will be closely monitored to ensure that timelines and quality standards are met, with the government reiterating that access to decent housing remains a central plank of its social agenda. Tenancy arrangements and application procedures are expected to be communicated in due course.
