Glacis Fishermen Welcome New Gear Storage Facility on Mahé
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Fishermen based at Glacis on the north-west coast of Mahé now have access to a new gear storage facility, inaugurated by the Seychelles Fisheries Authority (SFA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries and the Blue Economy. The ceremony was held yesterday morning at the site.
The new facility provides local fishermen with a secure, organised space to store their nets, lines, pots, buoys and other equipment. Gear management has long been a practical challenge for small-scale fishers in Seychelles, and the new store is designed to reduce losses from weather damage and theft, while also improving safety at the landing site. The SFA said the facility forms part of a broader programme to upgrade artisanal fishing infrastructure around Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.
Speaking at the inauguration, a Ministry representative said the government remains committed to providing working fishermen with the tools and infrastructure they need to operate safely and efficiently. ‘Our fishers are at the heart of the blue economy, and we must ensure they have the facilities to match their hard work,’ the representative said. Fishermen at Glacis expressed satisfaction with the new facility and thanked the SFA for responding to their long-standing request.
