Nigerian Visiting Delegation Discusses Disaster Risk Reduction in Seychelles

VICTORIA, Seychelles — A visiting delegation from Nigeria has held talks with the Seychelles National Disaster Risk Reduction Secretariat on cooperation in disaster preparedness, response and recovery, as part of a wider knowledge exchange programme in the Indian Ocean region. The discussions focused on shared challenges and best practices in early warning systems.

Both sides shared experiences on the management of natural hazards, including floods, landslides and tropical storms, with the Nigerian delegation keen to learn from the Seychelles’ experience of small island disaster management. The visiting team included senior officials from Nigeria’s emergency management agency, alongside technical specialists.

At the end of the meeting, both parties agreed to explore a formal cooperation framework covering training, joint exercises and the sharing of technical expertise. The Seychelles secretariat said such partnerships are essential for small island developing states, which often face similar climate and disaster risks and benefit from regional cooperation. A follow-up visit is expected later this year.
