MACCE and Air Seychelles Restore Caiman Estate Wetland for World Mangroves Day
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment partnered with Air Seychelles yesterday to restore the Caiman Estate wetland at Anse Boileau by planting different types of mangroves. The activity, which formed part of World Mangroves Day, brought together staff from the ministry, the national airline and community partners, all working together to bring the wetland back to its former splendour.
The initiative, taken back in April, is part of the ministry’s wider campaign to encourage the active involvement of community partners, including private-based organisations, in the conservation and sustainable management of Seychelles’ unique ecosystems, such as wetlands, rivers and waterfalls. The ministry’s senior climate adaptation technician, Cynthia Peton, explained that the activity aims to help the public better understand the value of mangroves and how they bring benefits in our daily lives.
‘We are working towards ensuring that all seven species of mangroves are displayed in the Caiman Wetland, as it is well known that mangroves help protect our coastline from erosion, absorb carbon from the atmosphere, and trap land-based pollution before it reaches the ocean,’ she explained, adding that it also serves as a habitat for various marine species, including fish, crabs and other coastal organisms. She urged the public to play a role in protecting nearby wetlands.
