Seychelles Ports Authority and Sweden’s RISE Sign Greening Partnership
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA) and the Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) have signed a memorandum of understanding to collaboratively advance the greening of Port Victoria, marking a major step forward in sustainable maritime development across the Indian Ocean.
Under this partnership, Port Victoria is set to join the world’s pioneering ports, setting standards and best practices for sustainable port operations, positioning itself as a regional leader and a global model for other small island developing states (SIDS) pursuing climate-smart, resilient port strategies. “This partnership highlights our commitment to pioneering sustainable development in port operations,” said Sony Payet, chief executive of the Seychelles Ports Authority.
The collaboration, which will run until December 2030, will be guided by SPA’s substantial investments in modernising and expanding its port infrastructure, and by the expertise of the Port of Helsingborg and Kvarken Ports. Officials said the partnership showcases the kind of forward-thinking cooperation that is essential for addressing global environmental challenges, and exemplifies how international cooperation can help small island states leapfrog to greener infrastructure. The partnership is also expected to support the country’s broader blue economy and climate change agendas.
