Seychelles Leads Regional Push for Whistle-blower Protection
VICTORIA, Seychelles — A two-day regional workshop focusing on sharing best practices and strengthening legal frameworks and mechanisms for whistle-blower protection is taking place at the Laila Resort, Anse Royale. The event, organised by the Anti-Corruption Commission of Seychelles in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, is titled ‘Islands of Integrity: Protecting Whistle-blowers in the Indian Ocean’.
The workshop brings together representatives from anti-corruption bodies across the Indian Ocean region, including delegates from Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and the Maldives, alongside international experts from the UNODC. Discussions will centre on legislative gaps, institutional protections, witness support programmes and the safe reporting of corruption in small island developing states, where anonymity is difficult to maintain.
The Seychelles Anti-Corruption Commission said the gathering reflects a renewed regional commitment to strengthening integrity frameworks. Participants are expected to share case studies, draft recommendations and develop a regional roadmap for the protection of whistle-blowers. The commission stated that such exchanges are essential in building a culture of accountability and trust, particularly in jurisdictions where corruption investigations can be hampered by the absence of robust legal safeguards for those who come forward with information.
