SEYPEC Marks 40 Years as Pillar of National Energy Security

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Petroleum Company Limited (SEYPEC) officially launched celebrations marking its 40th anniversary at a press conference held yesterday, with chief executive Sarah Romain emphasising that the milestone is not just a corporate celebration but a national one. Over the past four decades, SEYPEC has grown from a small local entity into a vital pillar of the country’s economy and energy security.

Mrs Romain highlighted that at no point in its history has the country faced fuel shortages, a testament to the efficiency and dedication of SEYPEC’s team. Beyond fuel security, the company contributes significantly to the national budget through dividends paid to the government, customs and excise duties on fuel imports, and various subsidies. Over the last decade, SEYPEC has subsidised the price of LPG for households, maintained stable public transport fares by supporting the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation, and absorbed fuel transportation costs to Praslin and La Digue.

The company has expanded its fuel storage capacity from 21,600 cubic metres in 1985 to 188,000 cubic metres in 2024, and established 21 bunkering points to position Seychelles as a key maritime fuel hub in the region. SEYPEC has also enhanced aviation fuel distribution by constructing an 8-km Jet A1 pipeline directly supplying Seychelles International Airport. As it embarks on its fifth decade, the company remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and national service, with the 40th anniversary celebrations set to feature a series of events aimed at engaging the community and recognising employees.
