UK and Seychelles Mark Completion of Three-Year Policing Modernisation Partnership
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The British High Commission in Seychelles celebrated the completion of the three-year modernisation partnership programme between the Seychelles Police Force and the British Government during a special event held yesterday at the Eden Bleu Hotel. President Wavel Ramkalawan, British High Commissioner Jeff Glekin, Speaker of the National Assembly Roger Mancienne, cabinet ministers and members of the diplomatic corps attended the event which cemented the programme, started in 2021. It involved over 45 visits from three former senior members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
A Strategic Review of Policing outlining a clear roadmap for the reform and modernisation of the Seychelles Police Force was published in 2022 by Commissioner of Police Ted Barbe as a result of this collaboration. This was followed by several workshops and bespoke courses focusing on leadership, capacity development, mentoring and coaching at all levels of the Police Force. Following the tragic death of a three-year-old girl, project leaders were also asked to support the National Child Protection Council review into safeguarding in Seychelles.
High Commissioner Glekin said the path ahead will not always be easy, but the direction is clear. Commissioner Barbe said the Strategic Review of June 2022 and the Seychelles Police Strategic Plan 2023-2025 have been the guiding lights, steering them through significant change and improvement. He noted that work is already under way on the strategic plan for 2026, which addresses 15 strategic points with 81 deliverables. Sir George Hamilton, one of the key figures behind the project, described it as a significant milestone for the police reform project in Seychelles.
