Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority Receives Orchid Donation from Thailand

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA) has received a donation of 11 varieties of orchid specimens — five plants from each species — from the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and the Botanical Garden Organisation of Thailand, to expand the Thai Garden at the National Botanical Garden in Mont Fleuri.

The plants were formally handed over to the chief executive of SPGA, Allen Cedras, by the acting director general of TICA, Pimwadee Sovaratnapong, during a short ceremony at the Thai Garden yesterday afternoon. Ms Sovaratnapong is leading a seven-member delegation on a two-day official visit to the authority, which also includes a representative of the Royal Thai Embassy in Nairobi.

The donation is part of a wider programme of cooperation between the two agencies covering horticulture, botany and biodiversity conservation, and is expected to include the construction of a Thai Pavilion as a new attraction in the garden. SPGA said the new plants and the planned pavilion would give visitors a fresh reason to spend time at one of Victoria’s most visited sites.
