Coetivy Island Prawn Farm Expands Sustainable Aquaculture Production

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Coetivy Island prawn farm has expanded its sustainable aquaculture production, marking a significant step in Seychelles’ efforts to develop its blue economy. The expansion includes new production ponds, upgraded processing facilities, and the introduction of more environmentally friendly farming practices designed to protect the surrounding marine environment.

According to the farm’s management, the expansion will significantly increase annual production capacity while creating new employment opportunities on the island. The project has been developed in close consultation with environmental experts to ensure that the operation meets the highest standards of sustainability. Stocking densities, feed management, and waste treatment have all been designed to minimise ecological impact.

According to officials, the Coetivy operation serves as a model for sustainable aquaculture development in Seychelles, demonstrating that commercial production can be reconciled with strong environmental stewardship. The farm has implemented a comprehensive monitoring programme that tracks water quality, biodiversity, and the health of surrounding ecosystems. Results to date have been encouraging, with no significant negative impacts identified.

The expansion is expected to contribute to food security, export earnings, and rural development on Coetivy. Officials have emphasised that the project aligns with the government’s broader strategy to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on a narrow range of sectors. Plans are underway to explore similar aquaculture opportunities on other outer islands, adapted to local conditions and species.
