VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the National Sports Council and the Ministry of Local Government and Inner Islands, conducted an inspection of sports venues across the country. The tour aimed to assess the condition of facilities, identify maintenance needs, and develop a strategic plan for future investment in sporting infrastructure.
Minister for Youth and Sports Kalsey Belle and National Sports Council chief executive Mario Pragassen led the inspection, visiting venues in several districts. According to officials, the tour identified common management and condition challenges at many facilities, including ageing equipment, inadequate maintenance, and limited access for persons with disabilities. The findings will inform a comprehensive national sports infrastructure strategy.
According to the National Sports Council, the evaluation covered football pitches, basketball courts, swimming pools, and multi-purpose halls. Officials noted that many of the facilities were constructed decades ago and require significant upgrades to meet current sporting standards. The council will work with district administrations to prioritise repairs and develop maintenance schedules to extend the lifespan of the venues.
The tour also assessed opportunities for new sports facilities in underserved areas, particularly on the inner islands. Minister Belle emphasised the government’s commitment to making sports accessible to all young Seychellois, regardless of where they live. A full report with recommendations is expected to be presented to Cabinet in the coming months, with funding allocations to follow.
