Boat Charter Operators Voice Concerns at Tourism Ministry Consultation
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Boat charter operators gathered at the Tourism department headquarters at Botanical House yesterday for a consultative meeting with Minister for Tourism and Culture Amanda Bernstein and principal secretary for Tourism Sherin Francis. The session provided operators with the opportunity to share insights on operational realities, challenges, and opportunities within the sector. Boat charter operators play a crucial role in Seychelles’ marine tourism economy.
This consultation matters to ordinary Seychellois because the boat charter sector employs hundreds of citizens and generates significant revenue for coastal communities. Small operators often face challenges with regulatory compliance, access to financing for vessel maintenance, and competition from larger international operators. Their voices must be heard in policy decisions that affect their livelihoods and the sustainability of marine tourism.
The meeting is part of a series of stakeholder engagements led by the Tourism Ministry to gather input from industry partners. Minister Bernstein emphasised government’s commitment to supporting the marine tourism sector while ensuring environmental sustainability. Operators raised concerns about operational costs, regulatory requirements, and market access opportunities.
Seychelles’ boat charter industry has grown significantly over the past decade, with operators offering fishing excursions, island-hopping tours, and diving expeditions. The sector contributes to the diversification of tourism offerings beyond traditional beach holidays. However, operators have faced challenges including rising fuel costs, vessel maintenance expenses, and increasing competition.
The Tourism Ministry announced plans for additional consultations with yacht charter operators scheduled for Thursday, January 15, and dive centre operators on Tuesday, January 20. These sessions will inform policy adjustments aimed at supporting the marine tourism sector’s recovery and long-term growth.
Stakeholder engagement remains essential for developing policies that support sustainable marine tourism.
