Four Seychellois Youths Selected for US Youth Ambassadors for Africa Program

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Four Seychellois students will fly to the United States on 8 July 2026 for a three-week exchange under the Youth Ambassadors for Africa (YA-AF) programme, a US State Department initiative that brings together 15-to-17-year-olds from across sub-Saharan Africa for civic-engagement training, the 4 July 2026 edition of Seychelles Nation reported.

The four are Maria Meme, Tyler Nicholas, Shana Zelime and Mariza Cadeau. They were bid farewell at a send-off ceremony on Thursday by family members and officials from the US embassy in Victoria. Two of the four, Maria Meme and Tyler Nicholas, were physically present at the ceremony, while Mariza introduced herself via a short video and Shana was represented by her father.

The exchange is run by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, which manages the broader family of high-school exchange programmes of which Youth Ambassadors is one. The bureau describes the model as bringing together outstanding young people from across the Americas — a sister programme to the Africa strand — to strengthen leadership skills, promote mutual understanding and encourage active community engagement.

For the Seychelles delegation, the programme runs from 8 to 30 July 2026 and pairs the four students with an adult mentor. They will join four delegates from Mauritius to form a regional cohort of eight, then travel to the United States for intensive leadership-development sessions, interaction with American youth, and visits to civic initiatives. The grant opportunity underlying the programme is publicly listed on SimplerGrants.gov as a US State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs award covering the Africa strand.

Speaking to Seychelles Nation, Maria Meme described her feelings as a mixture of excitement and anxiousness. Tyler Nicholas, who was recently elected to the National Youth Assembly, said he had researched the programme extensively before applying and saw it as aligned with his personal goals of leadership development.

The US chargé d’affaires in Victoria, Adham Loutfi, also addressed the delegation and urged them to use what they learn to strengthen their communities and mentor other young people on their return. “African countries often know us mainly as a tourist destination. They do not know much about our culture, which is why programmes like this give us a chance to show others what Seychelles is truly about,” Tyler said, in remarks carried by Seychelles Nation.

Jefferson Isaac, described by Seychelles Nation as one of the first Seychellois alumni of the programme, was on hand to offer encouragement. The exchange alumni network is a core part of the Youth Ambassadors model: past cohorts are expected to develop community-action projects after they return home, and alumni programmes typically remain in contact with the embassy and the State Department.

All travel, lodging and programme costs are covered by the US government. The next application cycle for Seychellois students aged 15 to 18 will open after the 2026 cohort returns.
