Japanese Film Festival Seychelles Launches to Mark 50 Years of Friendship

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Japanese Film Festival Seychelles is set to open on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, marking a historic milestone as the event coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Seychelles, making this fourth edition particularly special for both nations and for Seychellois audiences who have embraced the annual celebration of Japanese cinema and culture.

The festival holds deep cultural significance for Seychelles, serving as a platform to unite Seychellois and Japanese cultures by allowing audiences to appreciate each other’s differences and unique aspects. For ordinary Seychellois, the event offers a rare and accessible opportunity to experience Japan’s rich heritage, contemporary values, and storytelling through carefully curated film, providing cultural enrichment beyond the nation’s traditional arts offerings and strengthening people-to-people ties between the two countries.

This year’s programme has been significantly expanded to include seven films — up from the usual three or four — featuring several anime titles to create a family-friendly atmosphere. Screenings will take place at the ICCS Theatre from Tuesday, 3 February, to Saturday, 7 February, with free seating available to the public. All films are rated PG or PG-13, ensuring accessibility for families. The programme includes Father of the Milky Way Railroad on opening night, followed by Mondays: See You This Week, ITO, The Fish Tale, Poupelle of Chimney Town, Crayon Shinchan, and Dreaming of the Meridian Arc. Saturday 7 February will feature three screenings. Notably, Seychelles has joined the exclusive Japanese Film Festival Africa Tour, which brings acclaimed Japanese cinema to 17 nations across the continent.

The festival is an annual cultural initiative organised by the Embassy of Japan in Seychelles in collaboration with the Japan Foundation and the Department of Culture. Previous editions were held exclusively on weekdays, but this year’s programme has been extended to include a Saturday screening to attract a wider audience. Principal Secretary for Culture, Arts and National Heritage Cecile Kalebi and Ishizu Tomotaka, second secretary at the Embassy of Japan, jointly announced the programme at a press conference on Tuesday at the National Library in Victoria.

The Japanese Film Festival Seychelles is expected to deepen ties between the two nations in this commemorative year, as expressed by the Embassy of Japan. The change of venue and expanded programme reflect a deliberate effort to reach more Seychellois and build a broader appreciation for Japanese cultural expression on the islands. The festival also reinforces the cultural dimension of a diplomatic partnership that has endured and grown over five decades.

The fourth Japanese Film Festival Seychelles opens on 3 February 2026, offering Seychellois seven free screenings to celebrate half a century of friendship with Japan.
