Benjamin Vel appointed secretary of state for drug abuse prevention

VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Patrick Herminie has announced the appointment of Benjamin Vel as secretary of state for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and Rehabilitation, effective January 4, 2026.

Mr Vel brings over three decades of experience in social policy, drug control, rehabilitation services, research and programme development. He previously served as director of the Drug and Alcohol Council (DAC), where he led national drug control strategies, coordinated multi-sectoral responses, and guided the development of key national policies and strategic frameworks.

As secretary of state, Mr Vel will be responsible for driving the national agenda on the prevention of drug abuse, strengthening rehabilitation services, and enhancing community-based support systems, in line with the government’s commitment to safeguarding the wellbeing of all Seychellois.

According to a press release from the Office of the President, the appointment reflects the renewed priority being given to addressing substance abuse as a national concern, and the importance of building institutional capacity to deliver prevention and rehabilitation services across the islands.
