New Port Control Facility Inaugurated in Victoria

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Victoria Port Control Unit was officially inaugurated on Friday morning during a ceremony held at the SRC Customs House at the Seaport. The new facility is expected to strengthen border security, improve trade safety, and enhance Seychelles’ role in regional and international security efforts.

The Port Control Unit brings together functions related to vessel traffic monitoring, customs coordination, and security checks at the country’s main seaport. Officials at the ceremony said the facility will improve real-time situational awareness at the port, enable faster response to maritime incidents, and ensure better coordination between agencies operating in the harbour area. The unit has been equipped with modern monitoring and communication systems to support 24-hour operations.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister for Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation, Lisa Singh, said the new facility represents an important step in modernising port operations and reinforces Seychelles’ commitment to international maritime security standards. She added that the Port Control Unit will also serve as a key node for cooperation with regional partners in the Indian Ocean, particularly in the areas of counter-piracy, search and rescue, and the fight against illicit trafficking. Officials noted that the unit will continue to be strengthened in the coming years, in line with growing trade volumes and evolving security challenges in the region.
