Seychelles Farmers Association Discusses Climate Change Adaptation on Praslin
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Members of the Seychelles Farmers Association are holding a two-day workshop on Praslin to discuss the specific challenges they face and the practical measures they can take to adapt to the impacts of climate change. The workshop, which ends on Wednesday, is being held in the conference room of the Fire and Rescue Services base on Ile Eve, and is being facilitated by consultant Antoine Marie Moustache, who has held several key positions in the agriculture sector in Seychelles.
The session follows a similar two-day workshop held in August this year by representatives of Agriculteurs Français et Développement International (Afdi), during which participants discussed agricultural resilience in the region. That workshop also formed part of the preparatory work for the ClimAlliance project being undertaken by Afdi, with the objective of identifying measures and adaptation practices to address the impact of climate change on local farming.
Addressing members, the chairman of the Seychelles Farmers Association, Andre Sopha, said that climate change is here to stay, and called on farmers to participate actively in the discussions and to share their experiences on the ground. The workshop is expected to produce a set of practical recommendations that will help farmers across Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue adjust to changing rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and other climate-related challenges affecting agricultural production.
