National Assembly Approves Final Two Ministers in New Cabinet
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The National Assembly on Wednesday approved the last two nominees for the post of minister, namely James Camille and Amanda Bernstein, completing the line-up of the new Cabinet. The first to be called before the National Assembly was Mr Camille, who was questioned by members on a range of issues, including his plan to improve the functionality of the ministry he will head.
Mr Camille responded that he would perform his duties with discipline, integrity and transparency. On the issue of corruption and the country’s ongoing fight against drug abuse, he told the National Assembly that it will be an honour to serve in the new Cabinet. ‘As a prosecutor, I worked with the police in various circumstances related to drugs and I have seen the effects before the tribunal. We must admit that the former government did take some actions in the fight against drugs, but we must also be honest that much more still needs to be done,’ he said.
Mr Camille noted that crime has become more sophisticated and detection systems are somewhat outdated, calling for more technology and controls at entry points. He also addressed the proposed repeal of the hate speech law in the US manifesto, saying it should not be repealed as vulnerable groups need protection, though amendments could be made. Following deliberations, his nomination was approved with 27 votes in favour, four abstentions, and no votes against.
Mrs Bernstein’s questioning focused on public access to information and her vision for the ministry. She emphasised the importance of two-way communication and giving the public the chance to provide feedback. She also set out her priorities, including strengthening the visibility and responsiveness of the ministry she will lead, supporting local content, and ensuring that citizens can engage with government decisions more directly.
