Dr Patrick Herminie Sworn In as Seychelles’ Sixth President at Stad Linite

VICTORIA, Seychelles — Dr Matthew Antonio Patrick Herminie of United Seychelles was on Sunday sworn in as the new President of the Republic of Seychelles. This follows his victory in the presidential election runoff, held on October 9, 10 and 11 across the islands, where he secured 34,389 votes, or 52.7 percent of all valid votes, against his opponent Wavel Ramkalawan of Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS). Mr Ramkalawan garnered a total of 30,823 votes, or 47.3 percent of all valid votes cast.
President Herminie took the oath of allegiance and the presidential oath as Seychelles’ sixth President before Chief Justice Rony Govinden, in front of a large crowd which had gathered at the Stad Linite, Roche Caïman, to witness the historic occasion. Among the crowd were family and friends, dignitaries and party compatriots, including former President Wavel Ramkalawan. Also present were the new First Lady, Veronique Herminie; former First Lady, Linda Ramkalawan; former President Danny Faure, Vice President Sebastien Pillay, former Vice President Ahmed Afif, and members of the diplomatic corps.
Special guests of honour included the Vice President of the Republic of India, Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan; the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the vice chairperson of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Gao Yunlong; the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Kassim Majaliwa Majaliwa; and the president of the Council of Ministers of the Indian Ocean Commission and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Union of the Comoros.
President Herminie’s inauguration marks the start of a new chapter in the country’s political life, with United Seychelles returning to power after five years in opposition. He will serve a five-year term.
