Seychelles Honours Older Citizens on International Day of Older Persons
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Minister for Youth, Sports and Family, Marie-Celine Zialor, has reminded the older citizens of Seychelles that the country is grateful for their contribution to nation-building, their sacrifices and their wisdom.
‘Thank you for building this country, thank you for your sacrifices, and thank you for your wisdom. Seychelles honours you, celebrates you, and promises to make sure that you live with dignity, respect, and happiness,’ the minister said in a message on the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, being celebrated on Thursday.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that older citizens are cared for and included in national life. She noted that programmes have been put in place to support the elderly, including access to healthcare, social protection and community-based activities that help combat isolation.
The International Day of Older Persons, observed annually on October 1, was designated by the United Nations to raise awareness of the issues affecting older people and to acknowledge their contributions to society. In Seychelles, the day is marked with a series of activities, including cultural performances, health checks and recognition ceremonies honouring senior citizens for their service to the country.
