SADC Launches Electoral Observer Mission in Seychelles
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has launched its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) for Seychelles’ Presidential and National Assembly elections taking place this week, at a session held at the Eden Bleu Hotel on Saturday morning.
The mission was launched by the Head of Mission, Honourable Justice Andrew K. C. Nyirenda, and attended by senior government officials, Professor Kula Theletsane, director of the SADC Organ on Politics, and representatives of the Electoral Commission of Seychelles (ECS), political parties, civil society and the diplomatic corps.
The SADC observers will follow the three-day polling process starting on Thursday September 25, 2025 in the outer islands, before moving to the inner islands and Mahé on September 26 and 27. The mission is expected to issue a preliminary statement shortly after the close of polls and a final report at a later stage.
Justice Nyirenda noted that the deployment reflects SADC’s commitment to supporting democratic processes in member states and to providing an independent assessment of the conduct of the elections. The launch comes amid heightened political activity, with several parties holding their final rallies at the weekend ahead of polling day.
