Independent Candidate Kisna Louise Pledges Drug Rehabilitation and Agriculture Focus
VICTORIA, Seychelles — Independent presidential candidate Kisna Louise is a self-employed businessman who also describes himself as an academic. He has worked in tourism and education, and has been active as a volunteer in civil society, sports and youth work. Mr Louise is contesting the election with his partner, Brina Morel, as his running mate.
In an interview published yesterday, Mr Louise said he decided to run for President for two main reasons. ‘Firstly, because I believe I am able, and good for the job. I am a leader. I have worked with politicians before. They tried to use me, but instead of breaking me, they made me stronger. I now understand their moves, tactics, and how they operate. I feel confident that I have the abilities to serve.’ He added that he is a people-person who loves the poor and the vulnerable, and that this is what God has created him for.
His first-year priorities, he said, will be drugs and agriculture. ‘The methadone programme is not working. My top priority will be to set up a rehabilitation centre on one of our islands. Victims will be taken out of their current environment, given treatment with dignity, and engaged in work and activities where they will earn an income.’ His second priority is agriculture, because ‘if we empower these sectors, we can bring in a lot of foreign exchange. We need that to raise workers’ salaries and strengthen our economy.’ His motto is ‘People power’ and ‘Nation on the move’, meaning giving power back to the people so that together they can shape the future.
