Sacos Signs MoU with Mayor’s Office to Sponsor the Mayor’s Garden Project

VICTORIA, Seychelles — As part of its 45th anniversary celebrations, Sacos Group signed a memorandum of understanding with the Office of the Mayor of Victoria yesterday to officially sponsor the Mayor’s Garden project. Acting Mayor Lydia Charlie noted that this initiative is part of their ongoing effort to beautify Victoria, in line with the Victoria Master Plan of 2015 and the ‘Fer Victoria Referi’ project initiated by the Seychelles Planning Authority. The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will include wall cleaning and painting, soil retention, landscaping, installation of benches and lighting. The second phase will focus on the addition of facilities and further enhancements.

Under the agreement, Sacos will not only sponsor the project but will also adopt the site for its long-term upkeep, signifying a lasting commitment. The cost of the first phase is estimated at R250,000. ‘The Mayor’s Garden is a small but significant space located next to the Mayor’s Office. For many years, workers, visitors, members of the public and sports enthusiasts have frequented this site, but without the proper facilities and enhancements it deserves. Through this project, we will transform the site into a vibrant, welcoming public space,’ shared Ms Charlie.

The garden will preserve existing trees while introducing new plants and landscaping. It will serve as a place for relaxation, interaction and small gatherings, with proper seating, improved lighting and a mural that celebrates the character of the city. Practical amenities such as restrooms, waste bins and improved access will also be provided to make the garden functional and sustainable. The chairperson of Sacos, Patrice Bastide, spoke about the importance of the private sector playing an active role in community development. ‘For a homegrown company like Sacos, it is not only important to give back to the community, but also to make a lasting contribution,’ said Mr Bastide. The initiative is being undertaken under the guidance of the Seychelles Planning Authority and the Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA).
