Seychelles Hosts UN Country Team Retreat on Climate and Economic Resilience
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The United Nations Country Team annual retreat for Mauritius and Seychelles began yesterday morning at the Savoy Seychelles Resort and Spa, bringing together representatives from 25 UN agencies, government ministers, development partners, civil society and the private sector. The high-level meeting runs under the theme ‘Repositioning UNCT for Accelerating Economic and Climate Resilience for All in Mauritius and Seychelles’.
Speaking at the opening, the UN Resident Coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles highlighted the 2022-2026 Government National Development Strategy that Seychelles recently launched, anchored in the pillars of the 2030 Agenda. Special focus is being placed on climate change, innovative financing, and small-island developing states facing rising global uncertainty. Delegates also discussed how the new UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks can support SIDS, alongside cooperation on policy, data collection, and scientific advice.
Vice-President Vincent Meriton noted that Seychelles, as both a vulnerable SIDS and a leader in regional integration, has shown steadfast commitment to multilateralism. He emphasised the urgency of moving from small island programming to building sustainable growth, and called for cooperation that aligns with national development priorities. The retreat continues through today.
