SPA Opens Inter Island Parking for Independence Day Festivities
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Ports Authority has announced that its new Inter Island parking facility, located on the opposite side of the Inter Island Quay, will be temporarily made available to the public for parking during the Independence Day festivities. The announcement was made by chief executive Sony Payet during a press conference held at the site yesterday morning. The Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA) said the aim of this initiative is to help ease traffic flow and enhance accessibility for the public during the celebrations on June 29 to 30.
The car park, which can cater for 250 vehicles, will be opened as from 7am on Sunday to 7pm the next day. ‘Given that certain main parking areas in Victoria will be closed during the celebration of our 49th Independence Day anniversary and with the anticipated congestion, we have decided to support the Independence Day Celebration Committee’s request by temporarily opening this facility. This measure, which will ease traffic and parking challenges during the festivities, is in place for the two days, Sunday and Monday. Parking here will be free of charge,’ Mr Payet said. According to Mr Payet, the space is intended solely for parking and not for partying.
He noted that while it remains under construction, security guards will be posted to ensure the safety and control of vehicles. SPA is expected to announce the parking’s official opening soon, he added. It will feature a modern, self-automated pay parking system. Work on the new car park started in August 2023 with the clearing of the site by inmates from the Seychelles Prison Service and SPA staff. The project is part of SPA’s development plan to maximise parking space for vehicles going to and from the quay, given the high level of traffic congestion in the area. At present, the Inter Island Quay parking accommodates around 100 vehicles only.
