Media Commission Holds Election Coverage Training for Journalists

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Media Commission (SMC), in collaboration with regional media trainers, has hosted a one-day training session for journalists, photographers, videographers, sound technicians, and media managers on the professional coverage of elections. The training is part of a wider effort to strengthen the role of the media in the democratic process and to ensure that the public receives accurate and impartial information during the election period.
Speaking at the opening of the training, the chairperson of the SMC, Kate Carolus, said the training responds to the commission’s ongoing objective of fostering greater professionalism among media employees. “How do we acquire the obligation of providing our citizens with accurate, truthful and timely information and improving the journalistic standards used in Seychelles? It goes through the professionalisation of the media sector, particularly by strengthening the capacity of its actors to produce and disseminate rigorous and ethical journalism,” she said.
The training was facilitated by a regional media expert, Mootoosamy, who stressed that the electoral period is the business of everyone in the media, from the driver who takes teams into the field to the editor-in-chief who has the final say. Participants came from the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation, Today, Pure 107, The People, and this newspaper. A second training day is scheduled for Friday May 30.
