VICTORIA, Seychelles — An exhibition titled ‘Mémoires oubliées: Albert Auguste Fauvel et les Seychelles’, or ‘Forgotten Memories: Albert Auguste Fauvel and the Seychelles’, has opened in Victoria, exploring the legacy of the French naturalist and his extensive work documenting the archipelago in the late 19th century. The exhibition features a range of artefacts, illustrations, and archival materials from Fauvel’s travels and scientific observations.
The event got underway with a fashion show depicting locally-made garments inspired by the period of Fauvel’s visits, blending historical references with contemporary Seychellois design. Organisers said the fashion show was intended to bring the exhibition to life, and to highlight the continuing influence of the country’s multicultural heritage on its creative industries today.
According to the organisers, the exhibition is part of a wider effort to recover and share the work of early naturalists and chroniclers who helped shape the world’s understanding of Seychelles’ biodiversity and history. The exhibition is expected to run for several weeks, with a programme of guided tours, talks, and educational activities for school groups. Admission is open to the public free of charge during the launch week.
