Electoral Commission Trains Police Ahead of September Elections

VICTORIA, Seychelles — As part of its ongoing preparations for the presidential and parliamentary elections set for September 2025, the Electoral Commission of Seychelles is continuing its series of training sessions with key stakeholders. The first session for this year was with a group of senior officers from the Seychelles police force held yesterday at the commission’s headquarters in Mont Fleuri. The targeted training, for station and regional commanders from across the country, was to strengthen inter-agency collaboration and ensure they are well-prepared to support the electoral process.

The session was facilitated by the chief registration officer Sheena Max and senior legal officer Florie Benstrong. Some of the topics covered included election preparedness, voter registration and nomination procedures, electoral offences and the handling of election-related complaints. Also on the panel was the director general for Land Transport, Elvis Adrienne, who advised about the displaying of campaign materials, and head of visible policing superintendent James Tirant who talked about the complaint mechanism to be used by the police.

Speaking to the media, Mrs Max said the Electoral Commission of Seychelles expects the training will better equip officers to carry out their responsibilities, ensuring the election runs smoothly, freely, and fairly. According to her it is also crucial for the police, whose role is not only to maintain order and deal with electoral offences, but to provide security to the Electoral Commission of Seychelles. For his part, superintendent Tirant highlighted that while the officers are already well-versed in election procedures from past experience, the training further enhances their preparedness to ensure a smooth process. The Commission will continue with its civic and voter education programme to educate the electorates on the importance of taking part in elections and conduct during election.
