PUC Appeals to Seafarers to Respect No-Anchoring Zones After Inner Island Cable Damage

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) has appealed to seafarers to respect no-anchoring zones, following an incident in which the undersea cable supplying electricity to customers on Ste Anne, Cerf, Round, Long and Moyenne islands sustained damage, resulting in a loss of supply. The incident was reported at 9:40pm on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.

The PUC team immediately expedited all necessary logistics, including hiring of boat and diver services, and the first fault was located the following morning. The severed cable, located 2km off the coast of Mahé Island, is indicative of anchoring activities by a third party. Upon conducting further tests, the team found that the cable had been damaged at more than one location, and work continued through to Thursday and Friday to locate other possible fault locations.

Until all fault locations are identified and repaired, restoration time cannot be determined. The PUC has thanked its customers for their patience and understanding as the team works to restore supply to the affected islands.
