VICTORIA, Seychelles — Construction of the new Baie Lazare health centre, which began in April 2024, is expected to be completed within three months, the chief operations officer of the Seychelles Infrastructure Agency (SIA), Keith Arnephy, confirmed during a site visit yesterday.
Present at the visit were the elected member of the National Assembly for Baie Lazare, Hon François Adelaïe; district administrator Fatima Marie; principal medical officer for Community Health Services, Dr Josapha Jouanneau; and SIA project manager Marcus Cadeau. The new 800-square-metre facility, located behind the original centre, will offer a marked improvement on the 160-square-metre premises that closed on 19 April 2024.
The R5 million project is fully financed by the Seychelles government, with works being carried out by Chinese contractor Quin Juin International. According to SIA, the new facility leaves room for future expansion to accommodate population growth in the western district.
When complete, the centre is expected to provide a broader range of primary care services, modernised consultation rooms and improved waiting areas for patients. The Baie Lazare community has been without a local health centre for almost a year, with residents travelling to Anse Royale or the Seychelles Hospital for routine care in the meantime.
