VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Seychelles Prison Service has confirmed that, together with the Seychelles Police Force, it managed to control an incident that unfolded at the Persévérance remand facility on Wednesday. A small group of inmates attempted to interrupt a planned operation against illegal contraband inside the facility, prompting a joint response by prison officers and police units stationed nearby.
According to a spokesperson for the Prison Service, the situation was brought under control within a short period, with no injuries reported to staff or inmates. The Service said the operation against illegal contraband — believed to include mobile phones, drugs, and other prohibited items — was completed successfully after order was restored in the remand wing. The Prison Service commended officers for their swift, coordinated, and professional response.
The Service has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on contraband in correctional facilities, noting that such items pose serious risks to the safety, security, and rehabilitation efforts within the prison system. It added that a full internal investigation has been launched to identify those involved in the disturbance and to recommend appropriate disciplinary and legal action.
Meanwhile, the public has been reassured that the situation at the Persévérance remand facility is under control and that the safety of staff, inmates, and surrounding communities remains a top priority. The Prison Service also called on the families of inmates to cooperate by refraining from attempting to introduce prohibited items into the facility, reminding them that such acts are punishable under the law.
