National Assembly Approves First Four Ministers in New Government
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The National Assembly on Thursday approved the nominations of the first four ministers in the new government, in the second session presided over by Speaker Hon. Azarel Ernesta. The four approved nominees are Pierre Frank Laporte, Geralda Dora Desaubin, Barry Jude Jean Faure, and Idith Sharon Alexander.
The approval came in the form of four motions put forward by the leader of government business in the National Assembly, Hon. Sylvanne Lemiel, in accordance with Articles 63(1) and 69(2) of the Constitution. Each nominee was scrutinised by members of the Assembly before being confirmed, with the votes reflecting broad support for the new cabinet line-up.
The ministers are expected to assume their portfolios immediately and begin work on delivering the new administration’s priorities under President Patrick Herminie and Vice President Sebastien Pillay. The new government is taking shape at a critical moment for the country, with the economy, cost of living, drug crisis, and youth unemployment among the pressing issues identified during the recent election campaign.
Deliberations on the remaining nine nominees are expected to continue on Monday November 3, when the National Assembly reconvenes following the All Saints’ Day public holiday on Saturday November 1. Once all 13 ministers are approved, the full cabinet will be officially announced, and the new government will be in a position to deliver the State of the Nation Address and table its legislative agenda.
