Beoliere Rockfall Zone Declared Potential Disaster Area
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) has announced that the rockfall-affected zone in Beolière, Port Glaud, has been formally declared a Potential Disaster Area under the Disaster Risk Management Act, 2014.
The declaration follows the rockfall incident of September 15, 2025, and two days of intensive technical assessments that determined the rockfall originated from a single piece of rock, which broke apart into three sections upon impact. Temporary evacuation and mitigation work will begin today, Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
DRMD officials have urged residents in the vicinity to comply with the directives of the technical teams on site, warning that further movement in the area could trigger additional falls. The technical assessment will inform the longer-term stabilisation plan for the slope and surrounding properties.
The agency has also reminded the public to report any signs of ground instability, including new cracks in walls, tilting of structures or unusual water seepage, by contacting the DRMD hotline. The September 15 incident has prompted renewed attention to slope monitoring in the western region of Mahé.
