Electoral Commission Receives Application to Register New Political Party

VICTORIA, Seychelles — The Electoral Commission yesterday received an application to register a new political party under the name of ‘Seychelles National People’s Movement’. In a press release issued yesterday, the commission said that in accordance with the Political Parties Registration and Regulations Act, it will process the application accordingly. The application now enters a statutory review period during which the commission will examine the party’s constitution, its declared objectives, the signatures of its registered supporters, and the eligibility of its founding members.

The registration of a new political party adds to the diversity of Seychelles’ political landscape. Under the Political Parties Registration and Regulations Act, applicants must meet a series of administrative and legal criteria before registration is granted, including a minimum number of registered supporters, a clearly stated set of policy objectives, and a structure of internal governance that complies with the law. The commission will publish its determination once the review is complete.

Once registered, the Seychelles National People’s Movement will be entitled to contest general elections under its own banner, subject to the conditions of the Elections Act. The identity of the party’s founding members, its declared policy platform and its intended constituency are likely to attract public interest in the coming weeks. The commission has not yet indicated the likely timeline for a decision on the application, but observers expect the process to follow the standard procedural course.
