Seychelles-India Coast Guard Base on Assomption to Remain Under SDF Command
VICTORIA, Seychelles — The governments of Seychelles and India have agreed to construct a coast guard base on Assomption Island, which will remain under the full supervision and control of the Seychelles Defence Forces, President Patrick Herminie has confirmed. The Seychelles-India coast guard base agreement was announced during a press conference at State House, where President Herminie outlined the outcomes of his official state visit to India from February 5 to 10.
The announcement addresses public speculation about foreign military presence on Assomption Island. President Herminie declared unequivocally that all soldiers stationed on Assomption will be Seychellois, forming a permanent contingent under SDF command. India’s support stems from its interest in ensuring a secure Indian Ocean region, given Seychelles’ strategic importance near major trade routes and areas vulnerable to illegal activities.
Seven memoranda of understanding were signed during the visit, covering areas including environmental safeguards, military cooperation, food security, housing, and healthcare. Minister Marie-May Jeremie assured that all procedures will comply with environmental laws, clarifying the coast guard base and a proposed hotel project on Assomption are separate initiatives treated independently.
On food security, Indian companies will supply the Seychelles Trading Company with more affordable products. A loan of US $125 million and a grant of US $50 million were secured for housing development. Minister Dr Mervin Fanny revealed that Seychelles will now recognise medicines manufactured in India, opening access to drugs that are 70 to 90 percent cheaper.
Maritime cooperation was reinforced through Seychelles’ engagement with the Colombo Security Conclave, which includes India, Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Mauritius. Minister Veronique Laporte announced plans to introduce electric buses to modernise public transport, with two buses expected by the end of April. The Seychelles-India partnership continues to strengthen across multiple sectors.
President Herminie reaffirmed that while ties with India have strengthened, Seychelles will continue its independent foreign policy.
