Alain St Ange Appointed Ambassador-at-Large to Boost Seychelles International Profile
VICTORIA, Seychelles — President Patrick Herminie presented the Instruments of Appointment to Alain St Ange at State House on Thursday morning following his approval by the National Assembly as Ambassador-at-large, a role in which Mr St Ange will focus on supporting the country’s development and contributing to national progress, with a particular emphasis on tourism promotion and representing Seychelles in countries where the nation does not currently maintain a resident ambassador. Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Minister Barry Faure was present at the brief ceremony.
The appointment of Alain St Ange as Ambassador-at-large carries strategic significance at a time when Seychelles is facing acute pressure on its tourism sector as a result of the Middle East conflict and the disruption of aviation routes through the region. Mr St Ange brings decades of experience in tourism promotion, international representation, and island branding to the role, making him a credible advocate for Seychelles on the global stage at a moment when the country needs to work harder than ever to maintain its profile as a premier travel destination.
Speaking to the press after the ceremony, Mr St Ange said the occasion provided an opportunity to discuss with the President how he could best serve Seychelles and confirmed that his role will focus on supporting the country’s development and contributing to national progress. He indicated that discussions with President Herminie had included the possibility of representing Seychelles in countries where the nation does not currently have a resident ambassador, stating that ambassador accreditation in such countries improves Seychelles’ visibility and helps the country advance its interests more effectively. On tourism, he acknowledged the challenge posed by the current conflict, saying: “We must not think that it is easy; there is a war, and this conflict has blocked aviation from tourism source markets that go through Dubai and Qatar before coming to Seychelles.”
Mr St Ange previously served as Seychelles’ Minister for Tourism and Culture and later as Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine between 2012 and 2016, during which time he was widely recognised for helping raise Seychelles’ international profile as a travel destination. Over the years he has also played a leading role in several regional and international tourism initiatives, including the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands organisation and global tourism networks, where he promoted cooperation and visibility for island destinations. His appointment as Ambassador-at-large signals the government’s intention to draw on experienced figures outside the formal diplomatic corps to advance national interests across a broader range of international forums and bilateral relationships.
The Ambassador-at-large role is distinct from a resident ambassadorship in that it provides flexibility to engage across multiple countries and issue areas rather than being based permanently in a single location. For Seychelles, which has a limited number of resident embassies and high commissions given the small size of the country and its foreign service, the appointment of an Ambassador-at-large represents a cost-effective way to expand diplomatic and promotional reach in markets that matter for tourism, trade, and investment.
The appointment of Alain St Ange as Ambassador-at-large reflects the government’s recognition that navigating the current economic and diplomatic challenges facing Seychelles requires drawing on the full depth of experience available within the country’s talented and internationally recognised public figures.
